Do I need to replace the saddle on my acoustic guitar?
Saddles should be replaced if:
They are cracked
If the saddle was previously filed too low
If the saddle is leaning from being made too thin
If the saddle is made of an inferior material (plastic)
Should I shim my saddle?
Some techs believe shims under the saddle should never be used. I believe they can be used to good effect in very specific circumstances.
If the guitar is new to the player, and still settling in, a properly fitted hardwood shim allows the player to experiment with small changes in string height. A new, solid saddle will improve tone, but a shim is just more convenient, at the expense of some sound. A long-term adjustment that raises the string height should be done with a glued on maple shim, or preferably, with a new saddle.
